How to Test Using Your Keto-Mojo GK+ Meter
The best way to get started is to watch this quick demonstration or read these in-depth instructions! Otherwise, continue reading below.
About the GK+ Meter
The new GK+ meter is more sensitive than the older model meters. This also makes them more accurate - in fact, the new GK+ meter tested within 10% accuracy for glucose 96% of the time in its test trials of 100s of tests for FDA regulation. The GK+ meter has eight sensor connectors for measuring the blood, whereas the earlier meter models only had four. This makes the meter ultra-sensitive to interstitial fluid. The earlier generation models were very accurate, within 10% accuracy 75% of the time, but not as accurate as the new GK+ model. The older model meters are also more forgiving to imperfect testing practices, such as not wiping away the first droplet or squeezing near the stick hole.
Following all testing procedures is necessary with the new meter due to the sensitivity to interstitial fluid and microscopic contaminants on the hands. The first droplet will often read higher if you do not have clean hands, wipe away the first droplet, and make sure the strip is pressed firmly into the strip portal so all 8 sensors connect.
Be Prepared
Be sure to set up your meter (go to article, here) prior to testing and have all the materials you need for testing in front of you. This includes your Keto-Mojo GK+ Multi-function Meter, Keto-Mojo blood glucose test strips, Keto-Mojo blood ketone test strips, and the Keto-Mojo lancing device and lancets.
Getting Started
- Wash and dry your hands well before testing, or use an alcohol swab to sanitize the testing area. Do not use scented soap, as the chemicals in the soap can skew your results. Make sure there is no contaminant on the test site. The GK+ meter is extra sensitive to microscopic debris!
- Remove the test strips from the test strip foil pouch and place them on a clean surface. We find the easiest way to open the foil pouches is to tear the pouch in the middle crosswise. Note: check the expiration date on the back of the foil pouch before opening.
- Insert the test strip into the meter strip port and make sure it is secured.
- A symbol with a test strip with a flashing blood symbol will appear letting you know the meter is ready to test.
Best Practice for Drawing Blood with the GK+ Meter
The best method for getting enough blood flow is to squeeze your finger at the base with the opposing thumb and pointer, encircling tight and squeezing up toward the tip before you even prick the finger. (The ring and pinky fingers are typically better bleeders than the others). When the tip of the finger is nice and red, quickly release the circle grip, prick the finger, and immediately go back to the circle grip at the base of the finger squeezing up toward the stick hole. This should get you a nice good blood droplet. Quickly wipe away the first droplet and encircle the base of the finger and squeeze toward the tip again to get the 2nd droplet (this is the one you want to test).
How to Test with GK+ Meter
- Use your lancet device and prick a freshly cleaned and dry area of your fingertip, then ensure you get a blood droplet about half the size of a matchstick head. Use the second or third droplet of blood for your measurement, to ensure no interstitial fluid is mixed with your blood, which can skew results.
- With the meter turned off, insert the strip into your meter.
- Bring the tip of the strip to the blood droplet on your finger; on contact, it will draw in the blood via capillary action. Hold the tip of the test strip in the blood droplet until the meter beeps and starts counting down. Glucose will count down from 5 seconds and you’ll get a reading. Please do not touch the test strip during the countdown as this may result in an error.
- Immediately discard the glucose strip using the easy eject button on the back of the meter.
- Insert the ketone strip into the meter and bring the tip of the strip to your blood droplet. Hold it there until the meter beeps. The meter will start counting down from 9 seconds, then give you your results.
- Discard the ketone strip using the eject button on the back of the meter.
- You have 3 minutes to get your readings before the meter will shut off.
- The test result will automatically be stored in the meter memory.
What sites can I use to draw blood from besides my finger?
The most common and best place to draw blood from is your finger or finger tip. However, there are alternate sites that will work as well to measure your blood glucose and ketone levels with the meter. These sites include the side of your hand, the heel of your palm and even the top of your knee. Please see the video below for more details!
