What is a Health Information Exchange (HIE)?
A Health Information Exchange is a way of sharing your health information among participating doctors’ offices, hospitals, labs, radiology centers, and other health care providers through secure, electronic means. The purpose is so that each of your participating caregivers can have the benefit of the most recent information available from your other participating caregivers when taking care of you.
There are few things to note about getting external labs or results shared with Virta that we may have added to your profile that I'd be happy to share!
The Health Information Exchange (HEI) consent is established with each of your medical providers. Most patients usually give this consent at a Primary Care Doctor (PCP) visit. Unfortunately Virta does not have access to determine exactly when the consent was given, but if you reach out to your doctor's office they can confirm those details for you.
Labs and information are already loaded into the HIE prior to becoming a patient, Virta simply accesses it as a healthcare entity. If you would like to full opt out of the HIE entirely you would need to work with the outside provider that you originally provided consent to.
What can participating in a Health Information Exchange (HIE) do for me?
Virta’s access to your data from a HIE allows us to see a more complete picture of your health, and make more informed treatment decisions. The goal is for you to receive coordinated care more efficiently. Your health care information is available to participating health care providers where and when they need it without delay.
If I choose to, how can I change my participation status in the future?
