What is LMNT?
LMNT is a sugar-free electrolyte drink mix, created specifically for people following a low-carb lifestyle. Each stick of LMNT contains 1,000mg sodium, 200mg potassium, 60mg magnesium, and 0mg sugar, which is a perfect replacement if you would like an easy alternative to bouillon. How to use LMNT
The recommended way to consume LMNT is to add an entire packet to 16-24 ounces of water and to mix generously until the LMNT has dissolved. You can also get creative with these flavorful electrolyte packets and mix up different drinks with them; check out a few recipe ideas below. Please refer to your Virta Care Team instructions for individualized guidance on your daily sodium intake.
When to use LMNT
When following a ketogenic diet, it is important to get enough sodium due to the natural diuretic effect of ketosis. We recommend that you aim for ~5 grams of sodium per day (unless otherwise directed by your Virta Care Team). This can be achieved with ~3 grams coming from salting food to taste, and another ~2 grams coming from supplemental sources, such as bouillon or LMNT.
When it comes to timing, we recommend spacing out the supplemental sodium by about 8 hours, ideally, for optimal balance. For example, use one packet of LMNT in the morning, and another packet mid-afternoon or evening. If you start to experience symptoms associated with inadequate sodium and/or dehydration, such as headache, lightheadedness or fatigue, that may be a sign your body needs more sodium, and possibly more water as well. In addition to requiring more sodium when you’re in a state of ketosis, other factors like prolonged exposure to heat and exercise can increase your need further. Try to time your supplemental sodium to be about 30-60 minutes before exercising or heat exposure to help prevent symptoms. You may even need extra sodium during or after the activity depending on duration, sweat loss, etc. Keep a packet (or two) of LMNT with you so that you’re always prepared!
